Often, students are not introduced to career pathways or career role models at an early stage in their educational experience in biological sciences. Students aren’t aware of the career possibilities and what skills they will need to be competitive in biology careers. Self efficacy is important to all students, especially under-represented and non-traditional students, in biology. It is important to present students with examples of careers (speakers, videos, case examples, etc) so that they can begin to identify with these examples and make connections with the skills they are learning in biology courses.

We are addressing the following questions to help high school teachers of juniors and seniors, faculty of first and second year undergraduate students and career services professionals learn about biology careers and connect the skills students are learning in their courses to careers or jobs in the field of biology.

  • How can we expose high school students to the different types of colleges and university paths available to them for biology different resource/opportunities at each type of institution
  • What careers are available for students in biology?
  • What skills do students need to be prepared for these careers (21st century learning skills, and specific biology skills)?
  • How can we provide faculty and career services with the resources to show students how to connecting 21st century skills with career examples/role models/resources.
